MENTAL HEALTH AND PSYCHOSOCIAL SUPPORT

Burundi is a country with a long history of war, which has a precarious socio-economic level.

This has an impact on the mental health of its population.

According to a survey by ISTEEBU (Institut de Statistiques et d’Etudes Economiques du Burundi) conducted in 2019, 4.6% of the Burundian population suffer from symptoms that could suggest the presence of a depressive disorder. Sleep disorders affect 12.5% of the Burundian population, 12.3% of Burundians claim to have experienced one of the characteristics of mania in the week preceding the survey. 4.4% of the population suffer from acute psychosis. 4.5% of the population suffered from schizophrenia in the week preceding the survey. 8.3% of the population declare that they have seriously considered suicide at least once in their lives.

For all these reasons, IMIF includes mental health in its holistic approach.
